The City of Brookdale announced today the launch of an experimental “smart crosswalk” program aimed at improving pedestrian safety and reducing traffic congestion downtown. The new crosswalks are equipped with motion sensors and adaptive lighting that change patterns based on foot traffic levels and weather conditions.
City officials say the pilot program will run for six months and collect data on pedestrian wait times, vehicle compliance, and overall traffic flow. Early demonstrations showed the crosswalk lights adjusting brightness during heavy rain and extending walk signals during peak commuting hours.
Residents are encouraged to share feedback through the city’s website as the program continues. If successful, officials say the technology could be expanded to additional neighborhoods next year.
